Think about it

When I started this league many years ago I wanted to create a league where guys could have fun and compete in a good environment. I wanted the league to be distinct from your typical City league. Someplace guys could bring their wives, girlfriends and kids to watch them play and not be subjected to profanity or some of the poor sportsmanship so prevalent in these other leagues.

The attitude I wanted to encourage is that, I know we play for a trophy and T-Shirts, but at the end of the day we play for fun. Organized pickup. Friends playing ball.

Many players have stepped up and been role models for other. Billy McClaren comes to mind. Bubba Lemoine, Craig Perkins, Pastor Rick, Marshall Knight, Joe Saunders, Sam Lui and many others. Thanks for setting the standard.

However, over the past several seasons, as we have grown, we have had times when we’ve had to deal with cursing and players threatening to come to blows.

I was speaking to one our spectators last weekend. The wife of one of our players. She confided in me that she no longer feels comfortable bringing her kids out to watch their dad play because of the arguing, the opportunity for profanity and flared tempers on the field.

It made me take a step back and look at the league. My original goal was to create a God honoring league. I have to wonder how far we’ve strayed.

I know we’re competitive and players will get emotional. Part of that is the game, boys being boys.

This week I watched as two teams just flat out talked too much. Yelling at the ref and one player threatened another player and had to be ejected. It’s insane! We are not playing for money. We are not playing for fame. We’re playing for fun.

I realize we all want to win but I will challenge myself and all of you to step up your game in the weeks ahead. Not your playing game, but your witness. Are you setting an example for others? If you’re setting a standard, what standard are you setting?
